4 Myths About Dental Implants

4 Myths About Dental Implants

Despite what some individuals think, dental implants are a viable restorative option for most people who have missing teeth. Unfortunately, many myths abound about dental implants that can discourage people from considering them as a treatment option for missing teeth.

Myth #1: Dental Implants are Painful

It's a common myth that getting dental implants is a painful process. However, the truth and good news is that most patients report feeling very little pain both during and after the procedure. Your dentist will use local anesthesia to numb the area, making it so you won't feel any discomfort during the surgical placement of the implant. You may notice some mild swelling or tenderness in the area after the procedure, but this is typically managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. After a few days, the swelling and pain subsides.

Myth #2: Dental Implants are Expensive

While dental implants may seem like a costly investment, in the long run, they are actually an excellent investment. Unlike other restorative dentistry options, such as dentures, bridges, or crowns, dental implants are a permanent solution that can last a decade or even up to a lifetime with proper care. Furthermore, dental implants are more comfortable and natural-looking than alternative options, which can improve your self-confidence and quality of life.

Myth #3: Dental Implants Require Maintenance

Some people assume dental implants are challenging to care for and require much maintenance. However, this simply isn't true. After receiving your dental implant, following your dentist's post-operative instructions is imperative. However, once the implant is in place and healed, dental implants can be cared for just like natural teeth, with routine brushing, flossing, and dental checkups. In fact, many people find that caring for their dental implants is easier than caring for other tooth replacement options, such as dentures or bridges.

Myth #4: Only People with All of Their Teeth Missing Can Get Dental Implants

Of course, individuals with complete tooth loss (whom we refer to as fully edentulous) make excellent dental implant candidates. However, those with only one or two missing teeth can also get dental implants in those areas. Implants work well for both single and multi-tooth restorations, allowing restorative dental patients to replace as few or many teeth as needed.

Dental implants are non-invasive, so having them in your mouth won't harm your natural teeth or gums and is beneficial to your entire smile. Dental implants can help limit bone loss to other teeth (reducing the need for a bone graft) and reinforce the tooth on either side of them. They can be better for your oral health than a bridge since implants won't harm the tooth enamel of the teeth next to it, and there's no way to avoid this with a bridge.
